Don’t think too much. Appreciate your family. And remember: always wear sunglasses …

I’ve spent the past week and a half recovering from eye surgery. And I’ve still got a couple of weeks to go before my vision totally comes back, and the bloodshot eye-effect goes away. And all because I chose to wear cheap sunglasses pretty much all my life, instead of good quality polarized sunglasses.

The surgery I had was to remove a pterygium from my eye. Pterygiums can also be called “Surfer’s Eye”, but as I’ve never spent a second on a surfboard I’m pretty sure that’s not what caused it. It’s caused by prolonged exposure to UV light and spending a lot of time outdoors. Damn you Australian sun! If I didn’t have it removed, and a skin graft from my eyelid to replace the lost tissue, it would have eventually affected my vision. Here’s what a pterygium looks like (disclaimer: this is not my eye).

This is not my eye. But this is how bad it could get.

So off to the surgeon I went … I won’t bore you with the details of the surgery …

Now people had warned me that recovery would not be pleasant, and it wasn’t. It really wasn’t. Imagine feeling like several large, pointy sticks were stuck out of your eye, even when you closed it, and having a large amount of pain from that while not being able to do anything like read or watch TV to distract yourself. I had A LOT of time laying in bed, thinking.

Soooo much thinking.

Soooo much thinking.

I worried a lot, thought about all the things I could be doing instead of laying there, thought about my To Do list once I’d recovered, but actually I just really appreciated all the help I got from my family. I have some lovely friends. I’m thinking of one in particular who is a mum herself to two kids and pretty much the only other person we’ve trusted to babysit our son apart from family. But when it comes to more than a day or two that you’re out of action, you really need family to help out. Family don’t mind if you are in a raging, terrible mood because you’re in pain and frustrated. Family don’t mind if you haven’t washed your hair for a week and will run you a bath and help you in so you don’t fall over with your altered balance. Family will cook you whatever food you want, listen to your whinging and still love you for it.

I’ve been very grateful for all the help I’ve had from my amazing husband, my gorgeous parents, my brother and sister-in-law and my aunty. They all pitched in to help out, and it just made me realise: I’m very glad I have a family. I’m very glad I like them. And I’m VERY glad I’m creating a family of my own so I too can help out in years to come.

Now I’ve stretched my eye to the limit writing this, so I’m going to have a lie down.

But remember – wear polarized sunglasses every single day, even on cloudy days!

Stay fit & well,
Lisa x
